Visual Description
Anthrax picea is a species of bee fly (family Bombyliidae). Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, individuals exhibit the characteristic robust, somewhat hairy body form typical of many bombyliids.[1] The wings often display distinct patterns, which are common diagnostic features within the genus Anthrax.[2]
Biology and Classification
Anthrax picea was described by N.L. Marston in 1963 as part of his revision of the Nearctic species of the albofasciatus group within the genus Anthrax. It is an accepted species within the family Bombyliidae, a group of flies commonly known as bee flies due to their resemblance to bees and their habit of hovering near flowers.
