Visual Description
Based on observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Alluaudomyia are small, delicate flies.[1] They are characterized by distinct, dark, spot-like markings on their wings, which are otherwise pale or translucent.[1] The body is generally light-colored, often appearing yellowish or pale brown.[1]
Biology and Research
Alluaudomyia is a genus of predaceous midges within the family Ceratopogonidae.[2] Recent taxonomic work has expanded the known diversity of the genus, including descriptions of new species from regions such as the Hainan Tropical Rainforest in China. These studies often utilize morphological analysis combined with DNA barcoding (specifically COI sequences) to differentiate species and associate sexes.
The genus is organized into various species groups, such as the maculipennis group and the parva group.
