Visual Description
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Aleucosia exhibit characteristic features of the family Bombyliidae, including a robust, often densely pubescent body.[1] The wings often display distinct patterns or venation characteristics that have historically been used to differentiate species within the genus.[2]
Taxonomy and Systematics
The genus Aleucosia was established by Edwards in 1934.[3] Historically, it was treated as a subgenus of Comptosia Macquart, 1840, and was divided into four groups based on wing size, pattern, and venation. Recent cladistic analysis of the subfamily Lomatiinae has confirmed the monophyly of Aleucosia within a revised arrangement of Comptosia sensu stricto. Taxonomic discussions have highlighted that characters such as pubescence, leg spines, and postpedicel shape are significant for distinguishing groups within this complex.
