Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Afrozavrelia kribiensis exhibits characteristic chironomid morphology.[1] The specimens display a slender, elongated body typical of the family, with well-developed, plumose antennae in males and long, thin legs.[1] The wings are generally clear with reduced venation, consistent with the genus's placement within the Chironomidae.[1]
Afrozavrelia kribiensis was originally described by Kieffer in 1923 as Zavrelia kribiensis based on specimens collected in Cameroon and southern Africa.[2] While it was initially maintained within the genus Zavrelia by Freeman in 1958, it was later reclassified into the genus Afrozavrelia by Harrison in 2004. This taxonomic change was prompted by significant morphological differences observed across all life stages compared to other members of the genus Zavrelia.
