Visual Description
Aedes lineatopennis is a mosquito species characterized by specific morphological features. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset indicate that the species possesses a narrow vertex covered with scales and upright forked scales that are not restricted to the occiput.[1] The scutellum is covered with uniformly narrow scales.[2]
Biology and Ecology
Aedes lineatopennis is a member of the subgenus Neomelaniconion. It is known as an aggressive biter that feeds on both humans and animals. The species has been identified as a potential vector for several arboviruses, including West Nile virus, Rift Valley fever virus, and Japanese encephalitis virus, and has been associated with the transmission of dog heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis).
Morphologically, it can be difficult to distinguish from Ae. mcintoshi, and historical misidentifications have occurred.
Distribution and Genetics
While predominantly located in Africa, the species has extended its distribution to Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Indian subcontinent. Genetic studies have revealed significant global diversity, with 21 haplotypes identified in one study.
