Visual Description
Acrochaeta are slender, wasp-like flies characterized by a distinct, elongated body form. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a body with prominent yellow and black banding patterns, particularly on the abdomen.[1] The thorax also exhibits longitudinal striping, and the wings are typically translucent or lightly tinted.[1]
Biology and Classification
Acrochaeta is a Neotropical genus within the subfamily Sarginae (Diptera: Stratiomyidae).[2] A taxonomic revision has expanded the number of recognized extant species in the genus to 14. Cladistic analysis supports the monophyly of the genus, with diagnostic morphological characters identified in the head, thorax, and abdomen. Within the genus, the Acrochaeta flaveola species group is recognized based on characteristics of the male and female terminalia.
